Being struck by an object or piece of equipment or tasks where an object can strike an employee is commonly recognized as a “struck by hazard.”  Struck by incidents typically result in serious injury.  Imagine an employee working around an excavator.  This type of equipment swings and a common source of struck by incidents comes from being struck by the counterweight. The employee is standing in the counterweight swing path and caught between another object, like a wall or another piece of equipment. The result will be a struck by injury.

Training is an excellent means of avoiding these types of events.  Training all employees what to look for and how to avoid this hazard when working around such equipment is invaluable.  Take time to train employees (operators and foot personnel) to avoid such conditions.

An excellent source of “struck by training” is OSHA’s Construction Focus Four” Struck-By Hazards. https://www.osha.gov/dte/outreach/construction/focus_four/struckby/struckby_ig.pdf
